The beauty of Phuket lies in the amount of diverse food you’ll find. Thai food that we’re familiar with today is unique, but it did not get this way on its own. A few thousand years ago Chinese immigrants came to Thailand. Along with them, they brought their cuisine, commonly found in Thai cuisine today such as rice and soy sauce.
Phuket Island Southern Food
A well-known southern food found in Phuket is called Gaeng Som. It’s a spicy, sour soup that usually has vegetables and fish in it. If you’re into spicy soups, this is a must try!
Gaeng Tai Pla is another dish that is commonly eaten by locals in the South. This curry is made from fermented fish entrails, which gives the curry a strong smell and flavor. If you want to eat like a real southerner, you should definitely try this unique dish.
A chunk of Phuket’s population, approximately 35%, are Thai Muslims. Since many of Phuket’s Muslims are of Malay descent, a lot of the Thai food is influenced by Malay culture and cuisine. Food such as Khao Mok Gai (Thai Chicken Biryani), Massaman (fragrant Thai curry), and Roti Nam Gaeng (Roti served with curry) is a must try if you love spices and rich creamy curry’s.

On the south-west side of Phuket, the famous Patong beach is situated. Patong beach, mostly famous for its night-life and shopping, is almost 3km (1.77 mile) long. The beach itself is very nice. The only downside with the Patong beach is that during high season, it can be very packed. If you’re looking for partying or shopping, Patong beach area is a great place to visit.
Nai Harn Beach
Nai Harn is a stunning beach located on the very south end of Phuket. It may not be as well-known as Patong but that doesn’t make it any less beautiful. Usually less crowded and more quiet, this beach has a village atmosphere and a relatively hippy vibe to it. Nai Harn beach is the place where you just chill, relax and simply enjoy the good life.
